The Skates by Mark Rigney [4 stars]

From the Description:

A tragedy from the past that will not die.
Reverend Renner’s quiet, well-ordered Michigan life is turned upside down after he purchases a pair of nineteenth-century ice skates at a yard sale. First an enormous black dog takes to following him all over town, and then the skates attach themselves to his feet in the middle of the night. Frightened but curious, Renner seeks help from the one man he’d most like to avoid, ex-linebacker Dale Quist. Together, Renner and Quist work to unravel the mystery of the skates, a potentially fatal task that will lead them to England, and one of London’s greatest historical disasters.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is in no way reflected in my opinion of this novella.

The Skates is the first novella in the Renner and Quist series, it was also my first book by Mark Rigney. It will definitely not be my last. This was such a fun story! Renner and Quist are hilarious as they try to solve the mystery behind a pair of haunted Victorian ice skates and the huge black dog that seems to follow them. This story is very engaging, using just the right amount of humor to balance the spooky events surrounding the skates. I love the characters! Renner is kind of uptight and persnickety while Dale Quist is a good ol' boy that had me laughing through the whole story. I read this in one sitting because I just had to know what happened. I can't wait to read the next part in this fantastic series! I highly recommend this fast paced and fun 4 star read.
